Holy cow, that's a lot of grey.

I knew this day would come. I am grey. Seriously.

I have noticed random white hairs for years now. But they were never much of a problem. Until they started inviting friends over and having parties on my head. I'm definitely a "less is more" type of girl: I don't wear a lot of makeup. I rarely wear jewelry other than my wedding rings. And I shop at Target and TJ Maxx. I do my own pedicures.

I do go to a nice salon and pay $50 to get my hair cut. I cannot imagine how much it costs for color. Or how often I would need it. I've managed to live for quite a while without needing color. But now I need it.

So. I want your advice. Salon color? Keep in mind that I hate spending time getting my hair cut. I always wash it myself before I go because I don't enjoy having someone else wash my hair. Color at home? How hard is it? I use to help my mom but totally hated doing it. Sorry, Mom. Will I be able to find the right color? Should I go red? Ha. Just kidding. Should I do nothing and go all grey? Ha! Just kidding again. Not an option right now. I don't want to be mistaken for my kids' grandmother.

Let's have it: leave a comment and help me through this crisis. Quick.

well, here's the thing... it's a pain in the butt to color your own hair. I used to do it because a few years ago I saw a picture of myself and could not believe how old I looked compared to my real age. I had to color every 6 weeks or I started to look bald in the really gray areas as the white roots grew out. I hated the smell, it stung my scalp, and I'm poor, so I could not afford to get it done someplace else where the chemicals were not as harsh. In all, I hated it and the hassle so much that I quit, got my hair cut really short, and let the gray shine on. Now, I'm used to it. I'm 35 years old and mostly gray. I actually think your hair looks very nice in the colors it's got. I know that places like Locks of Love are begging for gray hair so that cancer patients can have natural looking wigs made. I also keep it gray because it's family tradition. People in my family went gray really early and many of them lived to be over 100 years old. I want to be that kind of cool. You look young, even with a little gray, so no one is going to mistake you for your daughters' grandmother. But, if you need a little bit of time to dye your hair to convince yourself either that it's for you or it's not for you, then do it. Hair can be cut, hair grows, and hair is fun to play with. I'd' go with a color that is as close to your color as possible. I'd not get the cheapest box of dye in the store. You should get one that covers gray or the gray will not be covered very well. And, I wish you luck!

I am 34 and started getting grays around 30...following in my dad's footsteps. It's now to the point where I have to do something every 5-6 weeks or I have an inch of not-so-lovely root regrowth. Agree with Happay Mommay, at-home color is a pain and messy. I have MY mom do my color (poor woman) b/c I've tried to do it myself and it never looks even. If you can afford it, salon is definitely the way to go. B/c I cannot afford $130 every 5-6 weeks (or even every 8-10 weeks!), I alternate and do the Clairol root touch up (which is quick and fairly painless) a couple of times in between salon visits. It blends in really nicely and never looks fake or bad -- totally recommend it. I went ahead and had my mom do a permanent color a few days ago b/c I had a box of it lying around, but I have I'm already regretting not just using the root touch up again. I don't like it nearly as well as how my hair colorist does full color. Maybe it's the color I chose, but it just looks duller and flat compared to when I get home from the colorist. :) Good luck! You are lucky in that the gray blends in with your lighter color --I couldn't even tell you had gray in your picture! (I have dark brown hair, there's no mistaking the gray!)

well I have been almost totally grey since I was 33 and still can't give in to it. I do my own coloring as I can't justify spend 100 of bucks every 6 weeks on me..now my kids would be different..i have a friend whose does it for a living and she took me to Sally's and showed me what to get and i have been doing it for OMG 10 years..where has the time gone..also the 3 times that i was going to treat myself and the the professionals do it have been night mares..the first time my hair was 3 colors starting light at the roots and went darker the furhtur down you went..btw my daughter had a soccer game that i had to take her too with that hair and then back in the chair for another couple of hours..the next time it turned orange..the last time i looked like i was going goth..if you do it yourself you want to make sure that you get a no lift color and remember that the samples are done on hair with no color in it..so when you put on hair that is dark it will be darker than the samples..okay enough i am sure that you are getting a ton of fed back on this..keep us posted on what you chose

Hey Marci~

I think the gray actually looks nice in your hair, looks natural and not "old". I think maybe take one trip to the salon if it really bugs you, to get them to blend in the gray, making it look highlighted, but seriously, you're like me. You're not going to enjoy the time or expense of maintaining it. I do home dye the white skunk streak areas around my face, a process fraught with danger..too dark, not enough, yadda yadda, but when the rest of my hair starts to match I'll blame my husband and kids and hope to make peace with it.

Doesn't it suck we can't be considered universally sexy with gray hair like, say, George Clooney?

Best of luck with this. You have lots of company in this worry, and we all feel for you.

You can buy a highlighting kit...and just highlight. No need to color your whole head...you're not that gray :)
